Ways2Capital Reviews : Indigo To Charge More For Excess Baggage

As per media reports, Indigo has hiked charges for check-in baggage in excess of 15kg from Rs300 to Rs400. This is a steep hike of more than ~30%.

It is said that passengers pre-booking their baggage will now have to shell out Rs1,900; Rs3,800; Rs5,700 and Rs11,400 for 5,10,15 and 30kg of baggage respectively in excess of the 15kg exempted from any cost. Those who haven't pre-booked their baggage will now have to spend Rs400 per kg if the weight exceeds the 15 kg mark. If customers who are booked on Lite Fare report at the airport with baggage to be checked-in, then they will have to pay Rs200 to avail 15kg baggage allowance.

In August 2017, the Delhi High Court had allowed the airlines the freedom to set the cost of excess baggage after which a number of airlines including Indigo has increased the charges for excess baggage.

We expect other airlines too will increase charges for excess baggage following Indigo. The increase in charges has come in the wake of rising air turbine fuel (ATF) prices since past 5-6 months, which has dented profitability of the airlines.
